Cooking on the Grasslands
If you stay on the grasslands near
Ulanhot you will have many options for cooking. Cooking is much harder
if not impossible elsewhere.
All your food will be cooked for you by a
local family on a wood stove. You can learn, assist, and cook to your
hearts content.
If the guide (Nara) is with you, she can
show you how to make Mongolian yoghurt and cheese. She has her own cow
for milk that will be milked that day.
The kind of Yoghurt and cheese varies
with the seasons. Firmer yoghurt and cheese is in the fall when it is
cooler.
You can even help get fresh lamb meat,
make Mongolian blood sausage, eat fresh cream, make Mongolian bread,
and eat fresh cream with Mongolian rice as I am now. Delicious.
You will have only limited lessons.
Most will be you actually helping with the cooking (and learning).
Typically, your meals (breakfast,
lunch, and dinner) will have four or five courses made on a wood
fire, and you can learn!!! There
are no gas stoves or electric stoves.
